Competition for starting quarterback job still continues in Buccaneers

After the Tampa Bay Byron Leftwich and Luke McCown 24-23 victory at Jacksonville, competition between quarterbacks Byron Leftwich and Luke McCown was extended another week.

The Byron Leftwich and Luke McCown first-year coach Raheem Morris promised previously that he would make his mind by the third preseason game. However, neither Leftwich nor McCown has established himself as the clear-cut No. 1 quarterback. Before Saturday, it seemed that Leftwich was more likely to win the job, but after Saturday’s winning, McCown’s good performance added winning chance to himself.

“It’s tough to evaluate, but it’s a decision the coaches have to make,” McCown said. “Once that decision is made, then it’s about everyone else being ready to play if called upon. It’s about doing whatever is necessary to help this football team win games in the regular season.”

And Morris planned to have a decision after the final preseason game Sept. 4.
