Westbrook returned to practice but may not play this week

The Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook has been cleared to return to practice after sustaining two concussions within three weeks from Oct. 26 to Nov. 15, but it is not likely that he will be ready to play in his Eagles jersey this weekend against the New York Giants.

The 30-year-old former All-Pro running back sustained his first career concussion when he hit his head on a defender’s knee during a Monday night win over the Washington Redskins. Sitting out two games because of the concussion, he returned to play with the team against the San Diego Chargers on Nov. 15 but sustained another concussion when he got sandwiched between a blocker and a tackler on a screen play.

Eagles Coach Andy Reid said the team will gradually get Westbrook back, and according to the running back himself, all the signs show that he will very likely to be able to play before the end of the season.

Westbrook will not play this Sunday against Falcons

While the Atlanta Falcons are worrying about injuries to key offensive players, the Philadelphia Eagles are having no better time. Running back Brian Westbrook is still suffering post-concussion headache and wide receiver DeSean Jackson is recovering from head injury and is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Falcons to battle for playoff spots in the NFC.

Sustaining two concussions in a three-week span, Westbrook needs more time to take care of his head before wearing back his Eagles jersey and has been ruled out for Sunday’s game, the third straight game to miss since being injured on Nov. 15. The former All-Pro running back saw concussion specialists this week in Pittsburgh again and will be re-examined in a week or two. What we expect is that he may increase his exercise regimen. But for playing game? Not likely in near future.

Jackson’s problem is also with the head. He sustained a head injury during last Sunday’s win over the Washington Redskins. But it seems that his condition is much better than Westbrook. At least Coach Andy Reid has not decided to rule him out for Sunday’s game, saying that the running back is making progress in recovering from the injury supposed to be concussion.

Redskins RB Portis visited specialists who examined Eagles RB Westbrook

In order to make sure there are not lingering affects before returning to the field in his Redskins jersey, the Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis went to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center on Friday to visit concussion specialists.

Familiar place and familiar reason? Yeah that is where the Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook was last week. The that were the same doctors who examined Westbrook, who has sustained two concussions in the last month.

Portis will have similar examinations as he sustained a concussion while playing against the Atlanta Falcons two weeks ago. Missing last week’s game against the Denver Broncos, he has also been ruled out for this week’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.

“We’re going to make sure we take care of all the details. We’re for Clinton getting well,” Redskins coach Jim Zorn said. “Each day Clinton’s done a great job of communicating how he’s felt, and that’s what it’s going to take.”
