With eight years veteran defensive end Alex Brown putting on the Vikings jersey during his free agency, the Chicago Bears need a qualified replacement to fill Brown’s shoes. By so far, it seems that fifth year veteran Mark Anderson has the biggest chance to get the starting job at this position.
If Anderson is confirmed to start where Brown used to start, he will play opposite another big name defensive end, Julius Peppers. However, he may also face competition from other Bears backup defensive ends, like unrestricted free agent Adewale Ogunleye. But Anderson still has his advantages. Busting onto the scene as a rookie in 2006, Anderson made 12 sacks as a reserve role in his rookie season and played with the Bears for Super Bowl XLI. He was originally named the starter over Brown in the next season but eventually lost the starting job because of injuries. So since Brown has left, Anderson now has a great chance to win the starting job back.
Being a starter may mean a salary raise and increasing popularity, but it also means more pressure. The Bears do not have many other defensive ends that could replace when starters had to have a break. So if Anderson is going to start at defensive end, he will have to be durable enough to play a full regular season.
